For the longest of times, they've been offering basic flip handsets that really doesn't do justice to the world's number one phone maker. Fortunately enough they've been graced with a magnificent smart phone like the Nokia E71x recently with its business oriented push. On the other hand, they've just released the Nokia 6790 Surge which is aiming to be a middle of the road device that focuses on messaging with features of a smart phone. It's not just that Nokia's name is on there, but hopefully it'll continue their push back into the mainstream with AT&T customers.<br /><br />The package contains:<br /><br />• Nokia 6790 Surge<br />• Charger<br />• Users Manual<br />• Getting Started CD<br /><br /><br />Before seeing it in person, the Nokia 6790 Surge just had a look that made it stand out and enticing. Those feelings quickly subsided as we noticed the almost cheap feel of the design. It's kind of hard gauging which way to hold the phone at first – we wonder which orientation the designers built the phone around. The glossy plastic used throughout just attracts finger prints and leaves us with a sense of inferior materials. The top portion of the phone with the screen is relatively thin while the body housing the QWERTY is almost three times as thick. It's wider (2.28”) when comparing it to similar side-sliding devices. Luckily it won't drag you down because of the lightweight (4.38 oz) feel in the pockets – the plastic casing is responsible for that. Although it has a resolution of 240x320 pixels, it just does not look quite as sharp as we hoped for. Even the colors seemed a bit of the drab side and doesn't jump out enough to make it stand out. The outdated look of the interface is partly to blame for the Surge's screen quality taking a dive. Placing the brightness to the highest setting will still pose a problem when attempting to view it in direct sunlight – making it difficult to see what you're doing.<br /><br />It's sometime confusing trying to comprehend which orientation Nokia had in mind when designing the Surge. The Nokia and AT&T logos near the speaker in the front make it more apparent that it's built with landscape in mind. The navigational pad is a bit small – frequently pressing the wrong button while the center select key is somewhat easier to push. All the other face buttons are almost flush with dedicated buttons for messaging, main menu, and Media Net browser. The volume rocker is appropriately sized as well as the camera key next to it. Nokia makes it easier to transfer data with the microUSB port on the left side. On the top edge, you'll find the speaker phone, 3.5 mm headset jack, and charging port. The 2-megapixel camera is by itself on the back – no flash or self portrait mirror to be found. Removing the back cover reveals the battery, SIM card slot, and spring loading microSD slot tucked away on the edge of the phone.<br /><br />Sliding the phone left to right will allow you access to the spacious four row QWERTY keyboard. All the buttons are next to one another with no spacing in between – they're large enough for your thumbs to feel out and quite tactile to our taste. Dialing a phone number is annoying because it can be accomplished only by using the numeric pad on the QWERTY. Thankfully you can bypass all of that by just accessing your address book and selecting the person you want to call. The bottom row of keys could've been effectively turned into additional buttons – you find the space bar and two shift buttons taking up excessive space. The backlighting is adequate with most of the illumination emanating from the center. The QWERTY was the stand out great feature – typing away becomes natural on it.

The N97's QWERTY keyboard might have been unexpected by the blogosphere, but the rest of the specifications have been doing the rounds for over a month now. Looking at the specs, the N97 is the Eitri, but without the compass or the proximity sensor, which were the most interesting things I was looking out for.<br /><br />In fact, other than the screen, it's not exactly pushing the boundaries in any of its features. You get the same camera, GPS and connectivity offerings in an N82, for example. There's a nod towards third party developer support with Nokia's Widsets, but these aren't exactly going to trouble Apple's AppStore. They've been around on the E90 for some time, and are almost without exception useless (and ugly, too).<br /><br /><br />In fact, the Nokia N97 is much like the N96 - an unbelievably good phone when looked at in isolation, but offering nothing innovative or competition-beating when compared to other phones on the market. The N97 is just a Nokia 5800 with a bigger screen and a QWERTY keyboard.<br /><br />If we had no iPhone or Google Android, the N97 would be a stunner. But we do, and so the N97, although undoubtedly good, fails to capture the imagination in quite the same way that these phones did.<br /><br />Maybe I'm being unduly harsh. With its 8 megapixel camera, autofocus, face detection and 3" screen capable of showing 16 million colours, it seems at first that it's a high end camera phone.<br /><br />Add GPS, WiFi, HSDPA, video recording and Google Maps into the mix, and it seems more like a feature phone.<br /><br />In fact, though, it's none of these things, yet all of them at the same time. It combines all of these features in one neat package, yet its focus is firmly on media in all its formats, no matter where you, or your media, is.<br /><br />The Aino's form factor is a touchscreen slider phone with a large 3" display and the camera on the back. It looks smart, but doesn't look too different from every other touchscreen phone out there.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Sony Ericsson Aino - almost a PSP</span><br /><br />The Sony Ericsson Aino seamlessly connects to the PS3 using Sony's Remote Play feature. This lets you control, interact and stream any of the content stored on the PS3 directly to an external device.<br /><br />Initially, Remote Play was designed for the PSP, but it's also found its way onto the Aino. As such, the Aino can be seen as a direct competitor to the PSP, albeit without any game playing functionality. But that's ok, as none of the games for the PSP are actually worth playing anwyay, so if you fancy a handheld media device, the Aino makes much more sense than the PSP!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Streaming content onto the Aino</span><br /><br />It doesn't stop with the PS3, though. With DLNA support and Sony Ericsson's MediaGo technology, you can also interact with any of the content you have stored on your PC.<br /><br />When the Aino is charging, it'll automatically connect to your PC over WiFi, and, via the MediaGo software installed on your PC, will automatically synchronize with all the content you've got stored on it.<br /><br />Once synchronized, you can then access this content over the Internet anywhere in the world. The content is stored on your PC, but you control, stream and ultimately view it (or listen to it) on your Aino. With the Aino, that's sort of the case, but it doesn't come as close to the iPhone experience as you'd expect.<br /><br />With the combination of touchscreen and superb 3" display, it's got the technology underneath it for Sony Ericsson to provide a decent UI. However, although the UI looks good, it's no different from their recent phones. You might not want to use it for large amounts of text, but because it's not designed as a smartphone, you probably won't be the type who wants to do that on your phone anyway. Navigating your content is extremely easy, and the sound and visualizations from the new Walkman Media Player 3.0 software are excellent.<br /><br />One feature that's missing that really shouldn't be for a media phone, though, is a 3.5mm jack. You can use the supplied earbuds, which fortunately are of good quality, but you can't use your own headphones. This is simply unforgivable, as every other manufacturer as moved over to the standard 3.5mm headphone jack design by now.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Software</span><br /><br />Although the Aino misses out on having an app store, it at least comes bundled with software from Google, Facebook and YouTube, with rumours of a Twitter app coming soon. It had been shipping in some other countries since last year and by the time we Brits were able to get our hands on it the phone had already sold a million units elsewhere.<br /><br />You can pick the phone up SIM-free from the <a href="http://shop.nokia.co.uk/nokia-uk/product.aspx?sku=3960297&culture=en-GB&cp=shophome&product=5800_dropdown#__anchor_ProductSelector">Nokia online</a> store or pop along to your operator and get it for prices from free on contract. Vodafone has even bagged an exclusive blue colour highlighted version. <br /><br />Such prolific availability at UK launch indicates that the 5800 XpressMusic is something of an attention seeker. It is, after all, the first appearance of S60 5th edition, which, vitally, supports touch control. That might be enough to make you want to rush out and buy this handset, but hold your horses. I see this phone as a competent first attempt rather than an all out iPhone killer.<br /><br />There is no pinch control. There are some sweeping controls - for example, moving through photos and song lists, but the implementation lacks the charm and wow factor of the iPhone's system. It feels more like S60-plus-touch rather than a bottom up designed touch interface. I am inclined to think that any mobile that has a touch interface yet comes with a stylus is missing an important trick. Fortunately, I didn't have to resort to using this one.<br /><br />Text entry is one of those all-important areas where the touch-based user interface has to be superb. If it works well then text messaging and emailing are easy. If not, they are frustrating. This may slow down the speedmongers.<br /><br />Another irritation is that sometimes the screen wants a double tap and I had to get used to when this was the case. One example is choosing, rather than simply highlighting, an option in the music player. Press, wait, nothing happens, press again. Irritating. Still, these niggles aside, I'm inclined to give the touch implementation eight out of 10 for usability.

With alot riding on it, not least the companies pride, read on for our thoughts on the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic.<br /><br />Firstly, just a quick introduction to give you an idea what the 5530 is all about. Nokia are fairly new to touchscreen territories. We saw the Nokia 5800, released at the start of the year, and most recently the Nokia N97, both fine devices but both aimed at the slightly higher price range. So what about those who want a Nokia touchscreen phone and fancy a bit of change to boot? Well, that’s where the 5530 comes in. Nokia have slimmed down the 5530 in every department compared to its bigger brother the 5800. The 5530 is slimmer, shorter, thinner and even marginally lighter than the 5800. All this makes for a more pocket friendly and, more importantly, comfortable in hand device. The phone is small but still usable which is often a difficult balance to reach. This is heightened further by the use of premium materials in the 5530’s construction, specifically the stainless steel used for the front. This helps to deliver a classy look and feel to the 5530 and also features a nice textured design directly above and below the display. Unfortunately the back abandons the premium metals in favour of a single plastic cover though this is still comprised of high quality plastics and features a nice embossed Nokia logo which encapsulates the minimalist design.<br /><br />The front of the phone is dominated by the 2.9 inch display. The front of the phone lacks physical buttons in favour of three semi-touch sensitive buttons that sit in the black border surrounding the display. These are call answer, end and menu and while they do look good, they certainly take some getting used to and aren’t as sensitive as the touch screen. One last addition, the 5530 features a stylus that slides out from the bottom left corner of the phone. While the 5530 may not win any awards for its design, it is a well made piece of kit with a quality look and feel and all the buttons found on the phone are easy to operate. Why Nokia insist on letting you insert the simcard from the outside without the ability to take it out without removing the battery is beyond me but it’s not a negative feature, just a slightly puzzling one.<br /><br />Nokia have reduced the size of the touchscreen found in the 5800 from 3.2 inches down to 2.9. Apart from the physical size difference, it’s very much the same as the 5800 with the 5530 featuring the same pixel count of 360 x 640. The fact that the 5530 features the same amount of pixels in a smaller display actually makes for a brighter more vivid screen. The 5530 uses resistive touchscreen technology meaning you can use your fingers or the aforementioned stylus. Though it does lack the fluid feel of capacitive touchscreen phones such as the iPhone 3GS, the 5530 is still very responsive and accurate when using the stylus or just your fingers. Personally, i steered clear of the stylus as i find using one somewhat fiddly. Besides, the touchscreen is more than capable of keeping up with you fingers alone. Scrolling through menus is simple and effective (though it doesn’t quite capture the finesse of HTC’s finger swipe technology).<br /><br />The 5530 also benefits from an accelerometer, a proximity sensor which switches the screen off when the phone is held to your face when on a call and handwriting recognition. The handwriting recognition takes some getting used to; you do have to very precise or have a good legible writing style for the phone to understand. For those who don’t get on with this feature, fear not; when texting or emailing you can use a standard on screen alpha numeric keypad (including predictive text) or turn the phone on its side and use a full QWERTY keyboard. This level of choice is a nice touch as it means each individual can find a way to use the phone that suits them best.<br /><br />Ok, so that’s the design and touchscreen out of the way, tune in tomorrow for the second and final installment of our 5530 review as we take a look at the user interface, features and give our final thoughts.

Here are 10 things to consider when you get ready to upgrade phones.<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">1. Connectivity</span><br /><br />Does the phone connect well with your computer and other devices? Some phones have bluetooth and can keep your address book synchronized every time you come near your computer. Others require a USB connection. Some only have synchronization software that works with particular operating systems. Make sure you know that the device will connect with the things that are important to you before you buy it.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">2. Email</span><br /><br />People are using their phones for email more and more. Make sure you understand not only what the device is capable of, but also what type of data plan you will need to get it to work. The ideal setup is having full syncing for contacts, calendars and email over the wireless network. If this is set up right, you should be able to add a contact to your desktop computer and pull it up on your phone within a few minutes without needing to do anything else.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">3. Battery Life</span><br /><br />My Blackberry will last two or three days on a single charge. Many phones will only last 12 to 18 hours. Make sure you get a phone that has battery life that is compatible with your usage patterns. A phone is only useful if it has power, and if you may only have a chance to charge it every other day, make sure you get a phone that isn’t going to be constantly going dead on you.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">4. Network and Bands</span><br /><br />Different areas use different types of cellular technology that aren’t always compatible. For example, it used to be very difficult to get GSM coverage in rural America. This has gotten a lot better over the last few years, but it is still a big issue if you travel internationally. There are many areas where CDMA just won’t work. Some phones are designed to work on many different systems (more on this later).<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">5. International Usage</span><br /><br />If you plan to use a phone internationally, make sure you understand where it will work, where it won’t and what types of plans are available. If you do extensive traveling, it might be cost effective to get a SIM card at your destination. Make sure your phone supports using a SIM card from a different cell phone company. Some of the international phones will let you add a SIM card (GSM technology) even though they are sold from a CDMA carrier in the US.<br /><br />Be sure you understand how the data plans work internationally. I’ve heard many horror stories about people coming back with thousands of dollars in cell phone charges because they checked their email overseas. In my experience, Blackberry is one of the few phones where you can get a flat rate on international data usage.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">6. Keyboard</span><br /><br />If you plan to use your phone for responding to email or typing SMS messages, make sure they keyboard is easy to use. I’ve tried a number of different keyboards and have given up on using anything other than a full QWERTY layout. I know there are people who can type 40 WPM using a regular numeric pad, so you may be fine with a different type of keyboard. Just make sure the keyboard supports the way you want to use your phone.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">7. Airplane Mode</span><br /><br />If you spend a lot of time in a plane, it might be worth getting a phone that you can use with the wireless turned off. This is useful on planes so you can answer emails, play games, look up contacts, etc. in an “offline” mode.<br />8. Software<br /><br />It is worth considering the software that is available for your phone. The iPhone has a very extensive app store with all kinds of different programs. Blackberry has recently released an app store as well. It may be worth browsing some of the offerings before deciding on a phone so you’ll have an idea of what third party programs might be useful to you.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">9. Standard Charger</span><br /><br />It is much easier to keep your phone charged if it uses the same charger as some of your other devices. The standard seems to be converging on a USB connection. However, some phones use a standard USB connection, but will only work with specific brand chargers. The Razr V3 is like this. If you try to charge it from a standard USB cable, it won’t work. (There is some software for the Mac that works around this, but it is still a pain.)<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">10. Additional Memory</span><br /><br />If you may want to expand the memory on your phone, make sure you know what it is capable of. For example, just because a 4 GB card will fit in your phone, doesn’t mean that the phone’s operating system is capable of utilizing all that space.

This is a "How To" for Connecting the Nokia Series 60 device (Nokia 7650, 6600, 3650, 3660 etc...) via Bluetooth TM with the Windows Widcomm software used by TDK, Billington, MSI and others Bluetooth USB Vendors. The guide was created with the 7650 hadset but the steps are similar for other Series 60 devices and have been checked with the 3650 and 6600.<br /><br />1. Pairing the computer and the Series 60 Handset<br />Pairing is the process of swapping pass keys and setting up a trusted connection between the Bluetooth USB adapter / card connected to the PC and the 7650 handset. Save any files and close any applications you may have been working on.<br /><br />2. Set up Bluetooth TM on the 7650 by going to the Main Menu, selecting Connect and then Bluetooth.<br /><br />3. Make sure the Bluetooth option is On and My Phone's Visibility is Shown to all. Remember what is in My Bluetooth Name - or edit it to one of your choice - this is what your 7650 will be seen as by other Bluetooth TM devices.<br /><br />4. Right Click on the Bluetooth Icon in the system tray, on the menu that appears go to Setup and then click on Security.<br /><br />5. A window appears and all being well the right hand pane will have your 7650 (titled what ever you have entered into the phone's My Bluetooth Name entry). If nothing appears click Refresh and your phone should then appear. Highlight the 7650 and click Execute Pairing.<br /><br />6. A window will pop up asking for a PassKey. Enter in a numeric only passkey and click OK.<br /><br />7. On the 7650 a screen pops up asking you to enter a passkey - key in the same number you just typed into the PC.<br /><br />8. By default any connections from your PC to the 7650 must be manually accepted on the 7650. You have an option to set up a connection from the PC to your 7650 as authorized, this means when you connect from the PC to the phone it won't ask you if it's ok and will connect automatically.<br /><br />9. To set it as automatic: On the 7650 in the Bluetooth TM Setting Screen, you joystick right to the Paired Devices screen, highlight the Computer you just paired with and press Options, select Set as Authorized and Yes. You will then see a padlock icon beside the paired device - this device will no longer require manual authorization for connections to the 7650.<br /><br />Now you should set My phone's visibility to Hidden - so that unknown devices searching won't see your phone. You can still be connected to by any paired devices. Remember to switch it to Visible if you want to pair with a new device or receive a file / business card from someone with an unpaired device.

Recommended: check for new drivers updates!<br /> * Switch onthe Bluetooth feature on your mobile phone and make sure that it can be seen by other devices.<br /> * On your Windows system, go to control panel, then choose Bluetooth devices.<br /> * Click on Add device and after it finishes the search, select your mobile phone.<br /> * When asked for a passcode, select any one of the options in the list. You can also choose to proceed without a password.<br /> * If you have selected to use a passcode, enter the same code on your mobile when asked.<br /> * Once this is finished, you have successfully paired your computer and phone.<br /> * Runthe mobile phone software you installed earlier.
